Harnessing the Power of Community: Fighting AIDS in South Africa
Tuesday, April 29, 2014 / 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
South Africa is at a crossroads, with its record of economic growth, leading status among emerging markets and appeal to investors threatened by the scourge of HIV/AIDS. The cost in human and financial capital is staggering as hundreds of thousands of people each year join the nearly 6 million living with the condition. But even as lost productivity and huge treatment costs sap the economy, community-driven prevention programs are making inroads against the epidemic. Organizations like Charlize Theron's Africa Outreach Project and Keep a Child Alive tap into these efforts to scale up prevention programs and make a demonstrable impact. The celebrated actress and activist will discuss her foundation's collaborative approach, including its partnerships with other international health organizations, its successes so far and the vital need for resources to battle the killer disease and ease its social and economic burdens.
